During the morning of January 14, 1969,
while being escorted by the destroyers Benjamin Stoddert and Rogers,
a MK-32 Zuni rocket loaded on a parked F-4 Phantom II exploded when
ordnance cooked off after being overheated by an aircraft start
unit. The explosion set off fires and additional explosions across
the flight deck. 27 sailors were killed and an additional 314
sailors were injured. The fire destroyed 15 aircraft, and the
resulting damage forced Enterprise to put in for repairs at Pearl
Harbor Naval Shipyard, Hawaii.

Black smoke rises from USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) in the aftermath of
a fire that occurred while she was underway conducting air
operations
near Hawaii on January 14, 1969. The massive fire started when a
Zuni rocket accidentally exploded under the wing of an F-4 Phantom
II.

Operation Sea Orbit: On 31 July 1964, USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) with
CVW-6 embarked (bottom), USS Long Beach (CGN-9) (center) and
USS Bainbridge (DLGN-25) (top) formed “Task Force One,” the first
nuclear-powered task force, and sailed 26,540 nmi (49,190 km) around
the world in 65 days.
