Travel Blog Names: How to Choose a Kick-Ass One (Plus What to Avoid)

In this article, I’m going to walk you through how to come up with an awesome travel blog name- without spending too much time overthinking it!

First things first- let me introduce myself. My name is Anna and together with my partner Tom, we run this travel blog along with a blogging school (Blogging FastLane).

To date, we’ve helped thousands of people think of a travel blog name AND start their blog so you are in good hands.

Before I begin, stop whatever it is you’re doing and give yourself a self-high five. Yeah! Why the high five?

Well, starting a travel blog changed our lives and if you’re on this article that means that you are interested in doing the same.  Three years ago, if someone told me that I would get paid to travel the world, I would have laughed.

I mean, jobs like that don’t exist, right? 7 years later, here we are still blogging and traveling the world!

This article will help you come up with travel blog names and tell you which ones to avoid to help you get started on your blogging journey.

Travel Blogging Tip #1: Your travel blog’s name will dictate the entire direction of your site so put some thought into it. The name you choose will become your brand and your online portfolio so make sure it fully reflects who you are and what you’re interested in.

To date, our blog has financially supported us as we traveled across four continents, giving us the freedom to live and work from anywhere we want to.

Want to Start a Travel Blog but You Don’t Have a Name Yet?

Understandably, choosing a name is what most people get stuck with, however, you shouldn’t use it as a reason to not start one at all.

After trying out a load of hosting servers out there, we switched over to Blue Host who has this awesome feature where you can immediately get started in setting up a blog, without having to choose a name right away.

As you might have known, there are a million and one travel blogs out there (literally).

You need a name that stands out, a name that’s easy to remember, and a name that aptly describes what your blog is all about. To help you get started, I’ve listed out a few steps on how to choose a (kick-ass) travel blog name which you can read below.

How to Choose a Travel Blog Name (Tips for 2022)

Step 1: Decide What You Want Your Travel Blog to Be About

First things first, getting a clear idea of what your blog will be about will help narrow down your choices when choosing a travel blog name. If you are having trouble niche-ing down, try writing down possible blog topics. This will be a big help in helping you brainstorm on topics you’re interested in.

Do you want to write about adventure travel? food? Family travel? Traveling around Europe?

Your blog topics will help narrow down what you are passionate about and what you enjoy writing about. While it’s easy to say that you just want to write about travel blogging in general, choosing a niche will help you stand out.

Personally, we decided to focus on Adventure Travel (mainly because this is something we are both interested in).

Choosing a niche from the get-go will help establish what people associate you with and will give you a general direction in the name picking front.

As soon as you’ve decided what your travel blog will be about, you can then start thinking of names that will work around it.

Before you go on a name picking frenzy, first things first. Here are few guidelines on what to avoid.

Things to Avoid When Choosing a Travel Blog Name:

Avoid Putting Yourself in a Box

Let’s be real here. When you’re in your 20’s the blog name The Crazy Broke Partying Backpacker can be fun and quirky but do you think it will still suit you when you’re in your 30’s trying to work with larger brands?

Same goes for blogs with relationship statuses attached to it. The Single Traveler might be a catchy name, but what happens if you meet someone on the road? Things and people change so it’s best to think of a name that will grow with your travel style.

A good example of this is Drew Binsky, founder of the blog The Hungry Partier. After successfully growing his brand, he realized that due to his name and the blog angle that he took (he was documenting himself partying around the world), big brands were refusing to work with him.

He then had to make the hard decision of scrapping his website, turning it into a community blog and creating a new one from scratch. Bottom line, choose a name that won’t put you in a box.

Similarly, even if you’re interested in budget travel, if you include this in your blog’s name, you are boxing yourself in from potential stays in five-star hotels or working with larger high-end adventure companies.

You can still write about being thrifty or budget travel, just avoid locking yourself into that niche forever. Understanding how you want to position yourself and your brand is key to choosing a good travel blog name.

Avoid Cliches and Duplicate Travel Blog Names

To date, there are already too many blogs that have the word nomadic, adventurous, wandering, backpacker, etc.

While it’s so easy to go with these names because they pretty much scream I’m-a-travel-blogger, it will greatly affect your SEO (search engine optimization) later on.

Blogs such as Nomadic Matt, Nomadic Samuel, Wandering Earl, and Adventurous Kate have all been around for a really long time so their blogs rank really well.

Choosing travel blog names with similar keywords mean that you are positioning yourself in direct competition with the big boys.

For example, hypothetically speaking, if I choose to name my blog Nomadic Anna, if someone wants to find me but they can’t remember my name, they do a general google search typing in: nomadic blogs + travel, guaranteed, the first 6 results will be dominated by the bigger blogs such as Nomadic Matt and Samuel.

Set yourself apart by avoiding duplicate travel blog names and avoiding the usual name cliches.

Avoid Names with Punctuation Marks, Numbers, or Misspellings

I once went to a branding seminar which said when choosing what to name your brand, business, or blog, you have to do the mom test. This is when you call up your mom and say:

“Hi mom, I’m starting a blog and it’s called 2TravelingLadz.com”.

If you have to spell it out and she repeatedly says, “huh? what? what’s it called? Let me get a piece of paper to write it down.”

If she does any of those things, you know you don’t have a strong brand name.

Remember, apart from finding your writing online, a lot of new followers will come from the people you meet while you travel. Having a good memorable name that doesn’t have complicated punctuation marks or odd letters will increase their chances of finding you quickly.

Avoid Names that aren’t available on all Social Media Platforms

As you’re building an entire brand (not just a blog), you also have to consider social media handles. Once you’ve narrowed down your search, checking if that name is available on all social media platforms is crucial.

When we first started our blog, we had no idea about all the ins and outs of choosing a travel blog name and didn’t check the social media account availability. Due to this, we ended up with  @adventurein_you on both Instagram and Twitter. Not a big deal but definitely annoying when trying to get people to follow you.

Another tip is not to choose a name that is too long for social media. Twitter has a maximum of 14 characters so keeping it to that character count is ideal.

You can use sites like Namechk.com (talk about websites with misspellings!) or Knowem.com to see if your blog name is still available on social media. At a minimum, here are a few social media accounts that you need to get for your blog:

  • Facebook Page (not personal profile)
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Pinterest
  • Youtube/Vimeo

Step 2: Decide on a Blog Name that is Descriptive, has good

SEO,

and is Brand friendly

After deciding on your blog niche and going over the blog names to avoid, it’s now time to start creating a shortlist of blog names.

Remember, good blog names should be descriptive, catchy, and SEO based if possible. We highly suggest to only choose .com blogs. Although the perfect blog name might be available in .net or .biz, .com websites are the most powerful and recognizable out of all the domains.

To inspire your short list, here are a couple of examples of great blog names and why they are awesome.

Travel Blog Names that are Descriptive

One of the hardest things to do is to get people to recognize your blog name and what you do at one glance. If your blog name can sum up what it will be about just by the name itself, you’re on to something! Here are a few great examples of blogs whose names are descriptive enough to sum up what their blog is all about.

  • cheapestdestinationsblog.com
  • aroundtheworldin80jobs.com
  • europesluxuryhotels.com
  • theartofscubadiving.com
  • familyonbikes.com

All of these blogs immediately tell you what you can expect when visiting their website. Because there are a million other blogs out there, letting your audience know what to expect from you from the get-go is crucial.

Travel Blog Names that have Good SEO

While I could get lost in a rabbit hole talking about SEO, all you need to remember is SEO (search engine optimization) is what Google uses to determine whether or not they put your content in the front page of google search.

For example, if you already know that you want to start a travel food blog, making sure that you have the word food in your blog name is good SEO.

By including keywords that you want to rank for in your blog name, it’s like saying

“Hey Google (or big G, as I like to call it), I run a travel blog that talks about food. My blog is focused on food so when I write an article called Must-Try Restaurants in Thailand, I know what I’m talking about because I’m a food blog.”

If you’re going for a destination specific blog, having the destination in your travel blog name will help it rank for that search term. Here are a few great examples of blogs whose names have good SEO and are keyword optimized.

  • fluentin3months.com
  • offbeattravel.com
  • notesfromspain.com
  • whygoitaly.com
  • boutiquehotelawards.com

Just by the keywords that they use, you already get an idea of what their blog is all about because of how they inserted keywords in their blog name.

Travel Blog Names that Reflect Your Brand

If you’re going to build a personal brand, having your name attached to your blog is a good way of going about it.

Some of the biggest blogs out there do this: Wandering Earl, Where is Sharon?, Mapping Megan…while this is a good way to go, you have to make sure that you know what it takes to build a personal brand (i.e. if you don’t enjoy being the star of the show, maybe a more general name would work.)

If you opt to sell your blog, later on, having your name attached to it will make it a lot harder as well. Later on, if you decide to expand your team and hire writers, doing this under a self-named blog might also be harder.

Consider your blog topics, what type of message you want to send across, and find a name that sticks! Here are a few examples of great travel blog names that reflect their brand.

  • thepointsguy.com
  • makingsenseofcents.com
  • gobackpacking.com

If you ever want to make money or generate some sort of income from your blog, you NEED to get hosting. Watch this video from one of our boot camps which talks about hosting, why you need it, and how to find the best one.

Step 4: Set Up Your Blog

Once you have your domain and hosting registered and set up, it’s now time to start designing it, creating the first few articles and coming up with the overall look.

Must Read: Here’s our step-by-step guide (complete with videos!) on How to Start a Travel Blog.

Although coming up with a travel blog name seems stressful, my advice is to enjoy the whole process. My partner Tom and I were drunk on a few bottles of wine when we choose our blog’s name and it all worked out perfectly.

Remember, although we suggest coming up with names that are keyword friendly, just because you have a completely unique name, it doesn’t mean that you can’t build it up into a big brand. Sometimes, it also pays to be unique and memorable to help you stand out.

FAQ on Travel Blog Names

Do travel blog name generators work?

In our experience, blog name generators are great to give you ideas but not every suggestion is accurate. There are a few weird combinations but they are a great way to get your ideas going. After you get a few ideas, come up with your own name using the suggestions as a starting point.

Can you start a travel blog without choosing a name first?

Yes you can! Follow our instructions on top which shows you how you can start a blog through Blue Host even if you haven’t finalized your travel blog name.

Can I start my blog even if someone already has a travel blog with a similar name?

During your research, if you find another website or blog using the name that you want, we recommend against starting your blog using the same (or similar) name.

This will avoid confusion within your potential readers in the future. Instead, look for other ideas. If a specific social media channel is already taken for your travel blog name, look at creating an easy to remember variation of that name.

Conclusion on Travel Blog Names

Hopefully, this article has given you a few tips on how to choose the right travel blog name. Your name is one of the most important parts of your blog so don’t rush the process!

However, as soon as you’ve found one, make sure you purchase it right away. Remember, you don’t need the perfect name in order to start your blog.

In fact, Google awards blogs that have been around for a long time so the earlier you get it started (regardless if it has a name or not), the better.

Plus, setting up and paying for the initial hosting is great motivation to actually follow through in starting your blog instead of just leaving it as an afterthought.

Starting a travel blog was the first step for us to gain freedom and live this crazy nomadic life that we do.

It has allowed us to travel forever as it funds our lifestyle, allowing us to work, travel, and even save money. Whether you’re starting a travel blog as a creative outlet, a way to make extra money, or to ultimately turn into a business like ours, we’re excited to see you take the first steps!
