What Is Network Security?

Advantages of Network Security

There are several advantages of network security. These include:

In addition, encryption scrambles data in such a way that it can only be unscrambled by those with a key (password).

So, networks can protect and control access to information. It is done by encrypting the data being transmitted over the internet.

2. Data Integrity

Ensuring that information and data are accurate. End-to-end encryption can also be used to ensure that the information is not altered by anyone.

So, this ensures that the information is accurate and reliable. 

3. Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA)

• Authentication – Network access control. 
• Authorization – Who has access to what network resources? 
• Accounting – Keeping a record of who accessed the network and when. This can also include how much bandwidth they used and how much data they transmitted. Accountability is ensured by logging all activities on a network. 

4. Availability, Reliability, Integrity, and Confidentiality

• Availability – Ensuring that the network and its resources are always available to authorized users. 
• Integrity – Ensuring that data is not altered or deleted in any way. 
• Confidentiality – Ensuring that information is not seen by unauthorized users or organizations. 

Disadvantages of Network Security 

There are also several disadvantages of network security: 

1. Cost 

Security measures can be expensive, especially if you have a large network. Also, if you need to implement multiple layers of security across your data center and networks. 

2. Complexity 

The more layers of security you have, the more complex your system becomes. So, this makes it more difficult to manage, test, and troubleshoot issues when they arise 

3. Inaccessible Data 

Sometimes you might need to keep certain information private. But, you may also want other people to be able to view it under certain circumstances 

4. Manual 

Some security measures require human action. So, it means there’s always a possibility for human error 

5. Training 

To ensure that all your staff understands policies and procedures, as well as standards for carrying out their daily tasks, training is required 

6. Security Breaches 

When data breaches occur, your firm needs to follow best practices for dealing with them. This is to protect both your firm’s reputational risk and legal liability.

7. Internet of Things 

As more devices are connected to the internet, it becomes harder to protect them all. 

So, you need to continuously assess new vulnerabilities and risks that are introduced by new devices.
