The Signals Network

The Signals Network is a French-American nonprofit organization which aims to create a pro-active dynamics towards whistleblowers.
 
Our first program focus on supporting investigative collaborations, so newsrooms are better prepared to work with whistleblowers. We play a project management role in the collaborative efforts of our media partners (The Intercept, Die Zeit, El Mundo, McClatchy/Miami Herald, Mediapart, The Daily Telegraph, Republik  – a combined audience of 144 million readers worldwide in 4 languages). We also provide our media partners access to a network of lawyers to which they can refer putative whistleblowers who are in need of legal counsel.

As a first step, our media partners chose to investigate and call for information on the misuse of big data. Their first investigation was published in May 2019. It exposed previously unreported connections between the heart of Russia’s internet disinformation campaign and a Spanish company.
 
Our second major program is the Whistleblower Protection Program which affords customized support services (legal, psychological, PR management, advocacy, online security, temporary safe-housing) to a selected number of whistleblowers who have contributed to published reports of significant wrongdoing. So far, we are able to offer these services in France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. We are actively involved in the support of the Football Leaks whistleblower Rui Pinto for example.
 
Our active board includes Ben Wizner (ACLU, Principal Legal Advisor of Edward Snowden), Runa Sandvik (New York Times, Senior Director for Information Security), Emma Daly (Human Rights Watch, Communication Director), John Kiriakou (CIA whistleblower), Antoine Deltour (Luxleaks whistleblower), William Bourdon (lawyer), Peter Bale, Dan Gillmor.
