The Magical Art of Disney Pin Trading in the Parks

So, have you ever heard of Disney pin trading?  Either way, the magical art of Disney pin trading is all throughout Disney Parks, and it is a true obsession for some!

Purchasing Pins

So, you may wonder where to start if you want to become a pin trader.  Well, first you must have pins, and you can find them in several places.  

Most merchandise stores around the parks sell official Disney Pin Trading pins.  You also may want to purchase a lanyard to show off those pins.  

In addition, you can get starter packs (usually around $25 to $30) that include a lanyard and a few pins.  This makes starting a little simpler.  

Pins are found online, as well.  However, buy with caution and avoid knock-off pins. 

Cast Members only accept Disney, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and Walt Disney World Resort affiliated pins for pin trading. If you’re unsure, keep an eye out for Mickey heads all over the back for authenticity.  

Pin Types

Disney pins represent resorts, attractions, and characters.  Pins come in all shapes and sizes, with varying capabilities as well.  Some belong to a series, and you see a number sequence on the back.  

True pin traders understand the importance of shopping early at events that feature special pins.  Oftentimes, they have high demand and sell out quickly.  

Pin Trading With Respect

Whether you are pin trading with other Guests or Cast Members, it’s very important to remain respectful.  Please, don’t touch someone else’s pins or lanyards without permission. 

Specifically for Cast Members, allow them to remove their pin and hand it to you.  Also, wait until later if the Cast Member is busy…you can always come back.  

Cast Members are not allowed to trade their award pins and service pins.  As a side note, Cast Members with green pin lanyards are only for children.  

What to Look For

If you are hoping to engage in the magical art of pin trading around the parks, look for small corkboard displays outside of shops and attractions.  You will see a Cast Member at each board ready to help you! 

Additionally, Cast Members hold pinboards near attractions and at most shops.  New boards are Mickey-shaped, but some are kept behind the counter.  So, just ask a Cast Member if you don’t see one.  Keep in mind, you can see pin trading locations on park maps too.  

However, Disney also added mystery pin boxes in October 2021.  It works the same, except you pick a mystery drawer and trade for the pin located in the drawer.  

Pro-Tips

If you seriously want to pin trade and/or display your pins, then you will need different pin-backs.  The rubber pin backs that come with the Disney pins come off easily, so be sure to get some silver locking backs.
