The Russo Brothers have made a splash in the movie and TV industry, directing four Marvel movies and also stepping into comedy, directing several episodes of Arrested Development, and Community, Happy Endings. The Russo’s production company AGBO have a partnership with Netflix, which has resulted in two movies so far: The Gray Man and Extraction. Ryan Gosling impressed fans with The Gray Man, a fun and fast-paced action movie that made a splash in July 2022. Joe Russo wrote the 2020 film Extraction which he and Anthony Russo also produced, a tense thriller about a drug lord.

Next up is The Electric State, which is currently filming and which stars Millie Bobby Brown as a teenage girl in a fascinating situation. Fans of Anthony and Joe Russo, Brown, and the rest of the cast will want to know more details about this upcoming movie, from the characters to the main storyline.

The Plot

Millie Bobby Brown stars in The Electric State as Michelle, a teenage girl who travels throughout the American West looking for her brother, who has disappeared. The sci-fi element of the story comes in the form of a robot that her brother gives her. This is definitely a premise that feels intriguing. The movie is adapted from the novel by Simon Stålenhag. The book’s description on the official Simon and Schuster website shares that the characters have become obsessed with virtual reality as this is a different kind of society than the one people live in today.

The Deadline announcement describes the setting as a “retro-futuristic past” and reported that the deal was finished when schedules for the Russo Brothers and Brown were worked out. Now that fans know that Stranger Things will end with season 5, and Brown will soon end her time as Eleven, it’s fun to see what roles she and the other cast members will take on.

As Joe Russo told Variety in an interview, “It seemed to us that the world of this story was so big that you could easily find other narratives in it,” Joe says. “How do we build a much larger context for what’s going on here? That feeds our ability to tell multiple stories.”

The Cast And Crew

The Electric State features an impressive cast with many favorites. Millie Bobby Brown is in the starring role and Chris Pratt plays Keats, a smuggler. Giancarlo Esposito and Ke Huy Quan joined the cast of Electric State. Esposito voices the robot who goes along with Michelle on her journey. Given Millie Bobby Brown’s talent and Eleven’s rebellion in Stranger Things along with all of her heartwarming scenes, the movie is sure to be a success. It will be fun to see Millie Bobby Brown take on this type of role.

Rounding out the cast are Billy Bob Thornton, Anthony Mackie, Jenny Slate, Jason Alexander, Brian Cox, Woody Norman and Stanley Tucci. Mackie is a familiar face for Marvel fans as he has starred in several films as Sam Wilson/Falcon along with the TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Given George’s best Seinfeld episodes and his hilarious turn as the favorite sitcom character, it will be great to see Jason Alexander play a part in a science-fiction film.

The Russo Brothers have adapted books before, as their Netflix movie The Gray Man is based on the book by Mark Greaney, which was published in 2009. Joe Russo told Netflix.com, “We never stuck directly to the source of material, even though we were inspired by it and there were story points that were compelling to us. It’s hard to take a novel and convert it to a film in its entirety. They’re very different mediums, and usually, you need a little less story on film than you do in a book. So when I sat down to adapt it originally, I had to look at how it should function as a film, as a visual story.”

The Release Date

According to Netflix.com, there is no release date yet for The Electric State. The movie did begin filming in fall 2022, however.

What’s On Netflix reported that the Russo Brothers have wanted to make this movie for a long time. After the novel was published in December 2017, they got the option that same month, and the movie sold to Universal three Decembers later. Netflix became involved in June fo 2022.

Production was paused in early November 2022 when a crew member tragically died. Chris Pratt said via his Instagram Stories, “Our prayers go out to the family and friends of our beloved teamster who passed away Friday morning. Reminder to hold your loved ones close,” according to E! News.
