The Best Gaming Headsets

Great audio in a video game can draw you into a digital world with bold effects, realistic details, and immersive soundtracks. A good gaming headset allows you to enjoy all of that while you chat with your friends and teammates, too. But even the best sound quality won’t do you any good if the headset is uncomfortable to wear for long stretches. After testing more than 30 headsets for our most recent update, we’ve found that the HyperX Cloud Alpha remains the most comfortable, best-sounding gaming headset for the price.

Our testing panels since 2018 have consistently rated the HyperX Cloud Alpha as one of the most comfortable headsets in our test group. You can adjust it to fit a range of head sizes and shapes, it has large earcups to accommodate ears of different sizes, and it feels comfortable to wear with and without glasses. The Cloud Alpha sounds great, with a spacious soundstage and clear distinction across the bass, mids, and highs so you can hear rumbling explosions, dialogue, and light footsteps. The combination of comfort and sound quality is rare at this price, and thanks to the headset’s removable 3.5 mm cable, it works with nearly any console or device.

If you don’t want to spend more than $50 on a headset, buy the HyperX Cloud Stinger 2. Its leatherette earcups feel good against the skin, and it’s lightweight and comfortable enough to wear for long periods of time. The Cloud Stinger 2 also delivers clear, balanced sound that keeps its integrity at any volume, and this headset has the best microphone of all our picks. After our first-impression audio test, we were shocked to learn that it costs only $50.

No other headset we tested this year matched the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro in crispness and detail. Its immersive surround sound makes playing familiar games feel like a new experience, and it’s light and breathable enough to wear all day. Although it’s a wireless headset, it also comes with a 3.5 mm cable that makes it compatible with any console.

An affordable wireless option

The JBL Quantum 350 Wireless doesn’t sound quite as good as the HyperX Cloud Alpha, but it’s the best option for those who want a wireless headset for an affordable price.

If you don’t want to be tethered to a console or a controller but you still want a decent, affordable option, we recommend the JBL Quantum 350 Wireless. It usually costs about the same as our top pick, but it sounds a little more flat and compressed in comparison. We also don’t like the feel of the headband as much as we like the HyperX Cloud Alpha’s, but it’s light and comfortable enough to wear for long sessions.
