Here’s the deal: always, Always, ALWAYS take thorough pictures of your bike! I’m fortunate that I did, as I always do, but this is the first time they have been necessary.

When I returned the bike, the guy checking it in noticed a crack in one of the plastic fairings and claimed I had had an accident and would have to replace the plastic pieces. I knew I hadn’t had an accident but was nervous when I parked the bike in Hoi An (that’s why I rented a bike) and the “parking lot attendants” moved it, perhaps they damaged the bike and I would be held responsible.

When I got back I had no tell tail signs of an accident: road rash/bandages. Because I had left my license, they have all the power. If they claim you damaged the bike (whether you did or not) you have to prove you did not. I tried to show the man checking the bike in that the damage was there but he was having none of it. He was on the phone with another gentleman (I believe the owner “Mr. Mango) who claimed the bike was fine when I took it out.

I eventually was forceful enough with my pictures (time stamped from the previous day) with the owner in them and in the order I took them. After a bit of a rigamaroll I was able to get out of there with my documents and $$$.

Here’s the thing; I get it. People damage rental things (bikes, cars, jetskis whatever). When they are damaged, the business owner has a choice to make. You charge the individual who damaged the item of course and fix it, OR you charge the person who damaged it, don’t fix it AND TRY TO CHARGE EACH AND EVERY SUBSIQUENT PERSON WHO RENTS THAT BIKE. I believe this is the case here.

Take very good pictures of anything you rent in SEA. Thankfully smart phones have made this much easier, and you are able to zoom in and they have the date on them. If you do damage a bike, you might want to look into going to the dealer to try to fix it on your own, or demand the broken pieces and just throw them away so some other poor sod doesn’t get screwed. I feel like this is shady business practices. YMMV
