Setting Up the Commvault Network Gateway

As part of the configuration for network gateway connections, you must configure the computer that you want to use as the Commvault network gateway. The network gateway must be a computer in the perimeter network.

Because the perimeter network always receives connections from outside, the Commvault network gateway must communicate with the CommServe computer through tunnel connections initiated by the CommServe computer.

For one-way forwarding, the network gateway can communicate with the CommServe computer through tunnel connections initiated by the network gateway computer.

Verify That the Network Gateway Meets the Hardware Requirements

  • The network gateway computer must meet the following hardware requirements:

    Number of clients

    Regular, authenticated, or raw

    Encrypted

    Fewer than 1000 clients

    Dual-core 1-GHz processor with 16 GB RAM

    Dual-core 1-GHz processor with 32 GB RAM

    1000–5000 clients

    Dual-core 1-GHz processor with 32 GB RAM

    2 x dual-core 1-GHz processor with 32 GB RAM

    Greater than 5000 clients

    2 x dual-core 1-GHz processor with 32 GB RAM

    4 x dual-core 1-GHz processors with 32 GB RAM

  • The only package that you need to install on the network gateway server is the File System package.

Add the Network Gateway and Push the Network Configuration

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Manage > Servers.

    The Servers page appears.

  2. Click Add access node.

The Add access node dialog box appears.

  3. Enter the Host name, Server Name, and OS Type of the client that you are going to install.

  4. Click Save.

    Information about next steps appears.

  5. Copy the information, and then click OK.

The newly created network gateway appears in the table in the Servers page.

The system automatically creates a new laptop topology called Laptop Topology, which uses smart client groups (Infrastructure, Laptop Clients, and Proxy Clients).

  6. Push the network configuration on the newly created Laptop Topology topology as follows:

    1. From the navigation pane, go to Administration > Network > Network Topologies.

    2. From the Network topologies pane, click the Actions button for the Laptop Topology topology, and then click Push network configuration.

Configure the Network Gateway

Configure the network gateway using one of the following installation methods:

  • Remote installation using the CommCell Console

  • Local installation using the installation package on a Windows computer

  • Local installation using the installation package on a UNIX computer

Remote Installation Using the CommCell Console

  1. On the Network Route Configuration page of the installation wizard, select the There is Firewall between Client machine and CommServe check box, and then click the CommServe can open connection towards client machines option.

  2. In the Local HTTP/HTTPS tunnel port number box, specify local port number 443, on which the client will receive communication from the CommServe computer (if you want to use a different local port number, you can change the port number from the CommCell Console).

  3. Click Next to continue with the installation.

Local Installation Using the Installation Package on Windows Client

  1. On the Network Configuration page of the installation wizard, select the Configure Communication services check box, click CommServe can open connection toward this machine, and then proceed to the next page.

  2. On the Client Computer Information page, complete the following steps:

    1. In the Client Name box, specify the name of the client computer.

    2. In the Host Name box, specify the fully qualified domain name of IP address of the client.

      Proceed to the next page.

  3. On the CommServe Information page, in the CommServe Client Name box, specify the name of the CommServe computer, and then proceed to the next page.

  4. On the Network Connection Information page, in the Local HTTP/HTTPS tunnel port number box, specify local port number 443, on which the client will receive communication from the CommServe computer, and then proceed to the next page.

  5. Continue with the installation.

Local Installation Using the Installation Package on UNIX Client

  1. On the Network Configuration page of the installation wizard, select Yes, and then click Next.

  2. Select CommServe can open connections toward us, and then click Next.

  3. On the CommServe Client Name page, specify the name of the CommServe computer, and then click Next.

  4. On the Port for CommServe to Open Tunnel to Client page, in the Local HTTP/HTTPS tunnel port number option, specify local port number 443, on which the client will receive communication from the CommServe computer, and then click Next.

  5. Continue with the installation.
