Rolex watches wasn’t always the exclusive luxury watch brand that it is today. Well before that happened, a young Hans Wilsdorf, the visionary founder of Rolex was making his career as a timepiece distributor. He envisioned a new type of watch, a revolutionary wristwatch that would be as precise and as elegant as the popular timepieces his company distributed.
Back in 1905 the public needed convincing of the reliability of such a new device since most wristwatches were not as precise as a timepiece. He sought out and employed a Swiss watchmaking company in Bienne to manufacture small, yet extremely precise movements. Over a hundred years later, his creation, the Rolex watch remains to be the single most recognizable name in the watch business and the largest luxury watch company in the world.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner watches, affectionately known as the Rolex Submariner came into existence in the early 1950’s when scuba diving was just becoming the newest trend. Divers demanded a watch that can go up to 100 meters / 330 feet underwater and Rolex answered this demand and developed the first ever water resistant watch; the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner. The Rolex Submariner soon became the divers’ chronometer of choice. The Rolex Submariner and Rolex Submariner Date models use Rolex perpetual movements, the 3130 and 3135. These movements are certified Swiss chronometers, a title designated for only the finest of high-precision watches that have passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute tests. The Submariner has models that are available in steel, yellow gold, two-tone which is a combination of stainless steel and yellow gold, and 18kt white gold.
After the introduction of this iconic, yet highly durable watch, Rolex allowed this design to evolve and had since equipped their new watch designs with numerous patented technical innovations. Divers have henceforth continued to praise the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner both underwater and on dry land.
