When picking the right foam board insulation for your job, there are three main types:

1. Extruded polystyrene (XPS): XPS is a closed-cell, rigid foam board insulation made through an extrusion process that helps prevent air and water penetration. This makes it a great insulation foam board that is also ideal for structural panels in wet environments. This is also highlighted by XPS’s low vapor permeance.
2. Expanded polystyrene (EPS): EPS is made from small beads of polystyrene that expand when heated to create a lightweight, closed-cell rigid board insulation. This type of foam board has similar properties to XPS, except that it has a lower R-Value and higher vapor permeance.
3. Polyiso board is a closed-cell rigid foam board, where the polyurethane foam is bonded to facers on both sides. Polyiso has some of the highest R-Values among insulation materials and the variety of facers make this product ideal for roof, wall, ceiling, and other specialty applications within commercial and residential buildings of all types.
