Residential Electric Tank Water Heaters | A. O. Smith
How do electric tank water heaters work?
A. O. Smith electric tank water heaters heat water using one or two electric heating elements.
When a hot water tap is opened, water pressure from the street pushes cold water into the system through a dip tube that delivers it toward the bottom of the tank.
This pushes hot water from the top of the tank out to the hot water pipes for distribution of hot water throughout the home.
Temperature sensors inside the tank signal the thermostat when to turn on the heating elements to add heat to the stored hot water.
Each electric tank water heater includes a thermostat, a temperature and pressure relief valve, and a drain valve.
All of these components are needed to monitor the hot water and ensure efficient, reliable, and safe operation.
The thermostat cycles the heating elements to regulate the water temperature to the specified temperature set on the control.

Which is better, gas or electric water heaters?
Depending on your needs, gas tank and electric tank water heaters each provide their own wide range of benefits. Gas water heaters are typically cheaper to operate than electric. However, they cost more upfront and depend on the availability of a gas supply line and adequate venting at the installation location.
There are a few different types of venting options that can be used for gas tank water heaters.
Electric tank water heaters are energy-efficient solutions for your home’s water heating needs. A. O. Smith’s electric tank water heaters have a
UEF rating between .89 and 3.45, helping you save energy in your home.
Although the recovery rate of electric water heaters is slower compared to gas water heaters,
electric models can be less expensive to purchase and installation costs are generally lower.

local plumber or contractor
to assist in the installation of your water heater.
