So, the ONT converts the optic signals from fiber to usable data. A router handles, well, routing, both across my LAN and out to the WAN.
Is a modem even necessary once you have an ONT? You could set your router directly up to the ONT, couldn’t you? I’m converting a standard FIOS install where I appear to have an ONT feeding both coax and ethernet cables into the house into just an internet configuration. As far as I can tell, the ethernet cable from the external ONT is running directly to the FIOS modem, and the coax is running to the cable box. Could I just replace the FIOS modem with my own router, dump the cable box altogether, and go?
