Reddit – Dive into anything

I work on my college campus as a photojournalist. I meet with my boss every week for a little over an hour going over different techniques, questions, or anything else we feel I need practice in. I have a few graduation/senior photo shoots scheduled for this summer and want to set up a small studio setting in my garage. My boss and I went over different things to do with lighting, i.e. where to put an off-camera flash to achieve different lighting effects on a subject’s face. I understand that it’s all just practice with that aspect. I also understand that off-camera flash set-ups can be quite expensive, and like I said, I’m a poor college student. I currently only have one Canon Speedlight flash. I know you can make soft boxes by hand or order umbrellas cheap. Any suggestions? Is there a benefit to flashes vs. continuous light?

TL;DR – Where can I find inexpensive studio lighting?
