Plaaastic Lived

Update : Gigi’s family came out in December 2018, after “they” posted about her suicide on @plaaastic in 2017, to confirm that she had indeed passed away for real.

You were friends…

Through mutual friends. Cool hair. I didn’t know Gigi was Plaaastic.

We had similar issues. I had eating disorders, was self harming. Felt therapeutic hanging out: understood, didn’t have to explain not eating. We’d hang out to 3 in the morning; she’d get 5 large fries from McDonalds.

We could look out for each other. We also enabled each other. “You look good thinner now.”

I wanted to get better. She didn’t. Couldn’t bring herself to talk about issues even though they were obvious. I couldn’t keep being that person, trying to help.

Style

She hated that when liked something, “basic” girls would start liking it too: sailor dresses, 90’s chokers. She wore what people didn’t have the confidence to pull off. Babydoll pink dresses with a heart-shape cutout in the chest. But she was their queen.

She had a God complex.

She liked to show off her legs. Her fans liked her huge thigh gap. She wore it as a badge of pride.

She didn’t try to be everyone’s best friend. Didn’t care if people stared.

Instagram

She asked me to model for one of her shoots. There wasn’t much preparation. She’s creative, original. How she portrays ideas visually. I was envious. I wanted to tap into her energy.

We didn’t really plan, improvised a lot. She thinks fast.

It got kind of gross, but I thought they’d make nice photos. Why not.

Working was the best of our friendship.

She’s real. Real crazy.

Suicide.

I was upset, but wasn’t shocked. She was extreme, didn’t half-ass anything. She was back in Vietnam; she sometimes did drugs. She married, divorced quickly.

She’s an urban legend, cautionary tale.

We were similar. I felt like it could it be me. She wasn’t close with family. Even if there was a funeral I wouldn’t know how to reach out.

“Suicide.”

She texted our Whatsapp group of friends end of last year (2018).

“Hey guys. Not dead. LOL.”

Some of us were pissed. Were we supposed to be upset? She didn’t reply. She’s a new account, doesn’t post her face, captions on it.

Why?

I don’t know why she killed her business, just to start again.

Shortly before she posted her suicide, someone broke into her apartment. Her laptop and valuables were stolen. Maybe she lost a sense of security sharing her whereabouts online.

Her legacy

I’m grateful to have been her friend. She made me face problems.

Honesty about mental illness. Her work. It speaks for itself.
