PAN – Personal area network
A personal area network is around an individual person. Personal area network involves a mobile computer, cell phone or a handheld computer device.
The type of network for example is used for data transfer between your personal devices to a private network. This data transfer is called Bluetooth.
Personal area network is constructed with cables or wireless, USB and Fire wire technology is often linked to a wired PAN, while a wireless PAN uses Bluetooth or Infrared connections. Personal area network covers a range less than 10 meters (30 feet). PAN can be viewed as a special type of Local Area Network (LAN) which supports one person instead of a group.
The standards used for PAN is layer 2 on the OSI model. IEEE 802.2 manages data packets. IEEE 802.3 mac addressing on network cards and the data collision detection over speed and media. IEEE 802.5 manages token rings passing ring topology.
Wireless PAN is a personal area network for interconnecting devices centred on an individual person’s workspace, which connections are wireless. Wireless PAN is based on standard IEEE 802.15 the two types of technologies used are Bluetooth and infrared data association.
