The closing of their flagship on Fifth Ave spelled trouble, and now Lord & Taylor is officially shutting down.

Lord & Taylor opened in 1826 and was the first-ever department store in the U.S., and was right here in NYC on the Lower East Side.

Like many other stores, business suffered during the pandemic and they filed for bankruptcy earlier this month on August 2. Even last week, the company said 14 of their stores would still be open.

But, apparently that is true no longer. They announced on Friday, August 28 that all of their 38 brick-and-mortar stores, as well as their online shopping have already started liquidation sales.

One silver lining? The company said there will be massive discounts, some on items that have previously not gone on sale before.

“Discounts apply to existing inventory, new store arrivals and on new categories not previously sold at these stores,” it said, according to CNN. “The historic event will also feature the sale of in store fixtures, furniture, and equipment.”
