The story of Herbivore Botanicals is kind of amazing. In 2011 Herbivore Botanicals set up their soap making business on Etsy. This soon grew into other skin care products. Don’t be fooled into thinking Herbivore Botanicals is an overnight success though; before their launch in Sephora and Nordstrom 5 years later they had sold thousands of products on Etsy and had garnered thousands of 5 star reviews.

I think there are several reasons why a brand like Herbivore Botanicals is doing so incredibly well. Increasingly people are turning to smaller, more ethical companies that don’t test on animals and the ingredient/product journey can also be traced (as seen in ventures such as Beauty Pie and Adexe Watches). There are no filler ingredients and everything has been specifically chosen for their active properties.

These ingredients are then made in small batches which ties in very nicely with the more considered consumer ethos of Slow Living. And let’s not forget about the aesthetics. Herbivore Botanicals products a beautiful to look at. This all makes for a magical concoction that hipsters and beauty lovers can’t ignore. But is Herbivore Botanicals actually any good?

I purchased two products from Sable Beauty, an online beauty boutique focusing on quality products. They really have a wonderful selection of brands, if you love finding hard to get products you’ll love Sable Beauty.

I picked up Herbivore Botanicals Pink Clay Exfoliating Floral Mask and Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist. I’ve used Herbivore Botanicals Pink Clay Exfoliating Floral Mask several times now and I still have lots left, so it’s actually pretty good value for money.

The mask comes in a dry powder which you mix with some water to make a paste. As with all Herbivore products there’s no filler just active ingredients and in the mask there is Kaolin (Clay), Rosa Canina Seed (Rosehip) Powder, Kaolin (and) Illite (red clay) (French Pink Clay), Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Powder (Chamomile Powder), Rosa Centifolia (Rose) Petal Powder and that’s it. I’m very happy to say that this mask is amazing. My skin is definitely smoother, very soft and much brighter.

It’s probably one of the best masks I’ve used and I’d definitely repurchase, although this should last absolutely ages even with regular use.

I love face mists and particularly rose face mists so I couldn’t resist Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist. Again the ingredients list is minimal with only active ingredients included:

Aqua (Water), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Water, Hamamelis virginiana (Witch Hazel) Distillate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water (Aloe Water), Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, Rosa Damscena (Rose) Flower Extract.

Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist smells gently of roses and is incredibly hydrating. I love using this to freshen up throughout the day and also as a simple makeup setting spray. I bought the small which is £16 which is quite expensive so that might put me off repurchasing it.

It is a very lovely product though and the packaging is reusable (as is with all Herbivore products), so I might try doing a DIY spray.

I am very impressed with the products I’ve used from Herbivore Botanicals and I can easily see why they’re going from strength to strength. Here’s hoping we see more indie brands shaking up the beauty market in 2018.
