Things for Hero Electric started with the Munjal brothers launching Hero Cycles in Ludhiana in 1956 and then later Hero MotoCorp in 1984. After dominating the internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheeler space for over two decades, the Hero Group diversified into electric vehicles with the launch of Hero Electric in 2007. Since then, until very recently, Hero Electric has been the market leader in the EV 2-wheeler space capturing nearly 65 percent of the market share in 2021, and having sold over 50,000 electric 2-wheelers the year before.Till date, the company claims to have garnered over 400,000 customers.

Even today, despite stiff competition from the likes of Ola, TVS and Ather, Hero Electric still remains one of the biggest names in the EV 2-wheeler space, although they do seem to have slipped a little in terms of market share. Today Hero Electric has a fairly reasonable portfolio comprising four high-speed electric scooters such as the Photon and the Optima, along with two slow-speed (>25kmph) offerings like the Eddy and Atria. Hero Electric also offers an electric cycle (not to be confused with Hero Cycles’ e-bikes) in the form of Velocity. At Auto Expo 2020, Hero Electric had shown a number of future concepts including a tilting 3-wheeled scooter and the company’s first attempt at an electric motorcycle – the AE-47. That said, at this point, the company hasn’t confirmed when they would be launching these products.
