Hanshin Electric Railway
The Hanshin Electric Railway, often shortened to Hanshin, is a private railway company operated by the Hankyu Hanshin Toho Group that links Osaka and Kobe.
The railway’s origins date back to 1889 when it was founded as the Settsu Electric Railway, but was renamed to become the Hanshin Electric Railway in 1899. The current company began operations in 1905. Joint operations with the Kobe Rapid Transit Railway and Sanyo Electric Railway started in 1968; Hankyu Holdings completed a purchase of a holding interest of the company in 2006.
The company also owns a baseball team known as the Hanshin Tigers. The name of the company is formed from the second character of the kanji for Osaka and the first character of the kanji for Kobe.
