GE in Vietnam | GE APAC

About

GE was one of the first American companies established in Vietnam in 1993, even before the U.S. embargo was lifted. In that year, GE set up its first representative office in Hanoi, with a subsequent office established in Ho Chi Minh City in 2001, in partnership with local organizations. In 2003, GE also established GE Vietnam Ltd., a 100% GE capital investment firm that offers a wide range of after-sales services for electrical and energy equipment.

Today, GE Vietnam currently employs approximately 1,300 people locally, and offers products and services in Aviation, Renewable Energy and Power. GE is well-positioned to unleash the full potential of its businesses, and shape the future of flight and the energy transition in Vietnam. Together with our trusted partners, we aim to continue driving long-term value for our customers, investors, and employees locally, and across the globe.

Future of Flight

GE’s advanced aircraft engines power more than half the aircrafts in ASEAN, and Vietnam is no exception. Utilizing proprietary modern technologies, GE provides Vietnamese airlines like Vietnam AirlinesVietJet and Bamboo Airways with best-in-class reliability, quality, and assurances — ensuring a safe and comfortable flying experience for passengers, as well as air travel that is gentle on the environment.

  • Vietnam Airlines is one of our earliest customers since the mid-90’s and has used nearly 70 GE engines to power its Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A320 fleet. Of these, 5 Boeing 777 aircraft powered with GE90-94B engines are still in operation.
  • During President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s visit to the U.S. in September 21 – 24, 2021, Bamboo Airways signed an agreement with GE Aviation to purchase GEnx engines for its Boeing 787-9 aircraft order of 10 firms and 20 options, which would help operate nonstop flights between Vietnam and the U.S for the first time ever.

Beyond providing unmatched quality, our engines are tried and tested to be incredibly reliable, with over 129,000 flight hours, no in-flight shutdowns, and a 99.9% dispatch reliability rate. Our best-selling GEnx jet engine is amongst the world’s most fuel-efficient engines and presents a leap forward in propulsion technology, using the latest materials and design processes to reduce weight, improve performance and deliver reduce CO2. It is also the only one in the world to feature a carbon fiber front fan system, amongst other unique technology features.

Energy Transition

In Vietnam, GE plays a key role in the power grid, supplying up to 30% (nearly 500MW) of national power, and supporting economic growth. GE’s gas turbine solutions also help Vietnam meet its growing energy needs with affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions, while providing a path to continued regional growth. We are proud to play a key role in the development of Vietnam’s wind farms across the nation, such as in Bac Lieu, Dak Lak, Binh Thuan, and Soc Trang. We have also positioned ourselves as long-standing leaders in Vietnam’s local renewable and hydro market and supply equipment for some of the largest hydro power plants in Vietnam, including those in Son La and Lai Chau.

Over the years, GE has also fostered strong partnerships with the Vietnamese government, including local state-owned partners such as EVNGENCO 3, and built a strong footprint of renewable innovation across the nation. This includes GE’s Renewable Energy station at Hai Phong, where we manufacture wind turbine generators and components, our Phu My facility, where we run a gas turbine service center, as well as the Dung Quat HRSG factory — one of two GE HRSG factories in the world. Our footprint across Vietnam showcases the best GE has to offer, delivering greater service and value to our customers in Vietnam, strengthening the capacity of our local team, and expanding our network of manufacturing and repair services around the world.

Partnerships & People Development

GE has established strong, long-term partnerships with local companies and governing bodies, such as Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam Electricity, Vietnam Railways, Petro Vietnam, as well as multiple state-owned and private hospitals.

Strategic Partnerships with Government and Industry Bodies

We have also launched strategic partnerships with key government and industry bodies in Vietnam, including agreements with:

  • Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to enhance Vietnam’s energy infrastructure
  • Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade to assesses the feasibility of manufacturing of steam turbines, accelerate renewable energy and develop local leaders in the energy field

Nurturing Next-Gen Talent and Leadership

GE strongly believes in the need to nurture and develop Vietnam’s next generation of technology and industry leaders. Since its entry into the market, GE has invested heavily in this field, partnering leading institutes of higher education, such as the Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Ho Chi Minh National University, to bolster the training and development of local talent.

GE is also one of two U.S. companies funding the joint Vietnam-U.S. Education Task Force, which provides recommendations for both national governments to strengthen Vietnamese-U.S. relations on higher education. The initiative aims to increase the number of Vietnamese students studying at American universities (especially Vietnamese Ph.D. students), to acquire the skills necessary to develop and modernize Vietnam’s fast-growing economy.

Continuous Learning and Development

Globally, GE invests $1 billion each year in training and education, making us the world’s best company for leaders in 2015. GE also offers numerous programs for the training, development and leadership of its employees across the APAC region. These opportunities include our Commercial Leadership Program, Financial Management Program, GE Engineering Management Program, internships for undergraduate and graduate students, and technical and soft skill training for businesses personnel.

Giving Back to the Community

GE Foundation has donated over $211,750 in financial assistance to 15 economically disadvantaged first-year Vietnamese university students, and $300,000 to support environmental protection in Vietnam.

In 2020, our employees volunteered and raised money to help the victims of the recent floods and landslides that occurred in the central region of Vietnam. A total of US$165,000 was raised to support relief efforts and re-establish schools in the Quang Ngai and Quang Tri provinces. GE volunteers were also mobilized to provide help to the severely impacted communities in this region.

In the fight against Covid-19, GE Vietnam donated 3,000 complete sets of Level 4 personal protective equipment (PPE) and more than 220 boxes of nutrition milk to support frontline doctors and healthcare workers in the ICU of Bach Mai Hospital, Viet Duc University Hospital, Hue Central Hospital in HCMC (field hospitals No.16, No.13 and No.14 respectively), Binh Tan Center for emergency aid and treatment in Ho Chi Minh City, Nghe An Friendship General Hospital in Nghe An, and the Ba Ria – Vung Tau authority. These donations amounted to over VND600 million, and were generously contributed by GE employees and businesses across Vietnam. At the end of December 2020, 1,760 more complete sets of Level 4 personal protective equipment (PPE), worth nearly VND273 million, were given to support the Fatherland Front in Lam Dong and Soc Trang provinces.

GE Volunteers Network

We also encourage our network of employee volunteers to actively participate in various volunteer programs that benefit the community. These activities include cleaning the campus of Hoa Phuong Orphanage center in Hai Phong, conducting a garbage collection campaign at Nha Trang and Da Nang beach, and planting trees at a local school. GE Volunteers also mobilize donation drives during times of calamities and are strong supporters of the Blood Donation Drive by Vietnam Red Cross.
