July 23 – It’s a shame that sumo has catered the
workings of the entire Makuuchi division around the concept of
projecting the Ozeki in as positive of a light as possible. Because the
Ozeki cannot carry a basho themselves, adjustments are made so that the
basho carries the Ozeki. The yusho line is always lowered in order to
keep one of them on the leaderboard; the quality of sumo among the jo’i
rikishi is compromised in order to feed the Ozeki wins; and younger
rikishi who could actually add excitement to the sport are stifled.
