What are Easy Side Dish Recipes?
Other than being a dish that you serve alongside the main entrée, a side dish can have some useful functions:
- diversify flavors
- add nutritional value
- functionality – think bread or rice to soak up sauces and gravy.
There are many super Easy Side Dishes that fall into one or more of the following categories:
- can be made quickly
- uses common ingredients
- uses only a few ingredients
- can be made ahead of time
- does not need a lot of attention
Whether it’s veggies, potatoes, rolls, or fruit – this collection of Easy Sides are perfect for even the most novice chef. And they do not skimp on flavor!! We’ve made meal planning easy, so go read a book. 😉
Meal Planning
Picking sides. Sides should complement your meal and provide additional flavors and textures.
- Serve both hot and cold sides.
- Try not to repeat ingredients. If you are serving pork as the main dish, don’t choose sides that have pork.
- Plan to provide 3-4 different side dishes for a group of 6 or less. Add another side dish for every 5 more people.
Making ahead of time. Many side dishes can be completely made ahead of time. Others can be prepped in advance, so that when it’s time to complete the dish, it goes much more quickly.
If you make any dishes that need to be kept warm:
- crock pots and chafing dishes are my favorite choices
- a cooler is insulated, and will help hot foods stay warm
- a gas grill with a thermometer will work to keep foods warm (keep the internal temp around 200°F)
- use an insulated food carrier
How much to make
I have my favorite sides that I like to pair with certain main dishes, and by now I have the hang of how much my family will eat. I imagine you are the same at your house.
When I have guests, planning how much to make gets a little trickier. In general I follow this guide:
- Potato dish: 6 oz per person
- Rice: 1 ½ oz per person
- Pasta: 2 oz per person
- Vegetable dish: 4 oz per person
- Bread: 1 ½ rolls per person
- Salad: ½-1 c cup per person
