Our pressure-treated softwood New Railway Sleepers are ideal for a variety of landscaping projects, including retaining walls, edging, and building raised garden beds.

This product is available at a cheaper price than our equivalent length 200mm x 100mm railway sleeper, with an inconspicuous difference in the width and depth. As our other new railway sleepers, they are made from the same pressure-treated softwood, and are ideal for all the same applications.

When it comes to choosing between original, reclaimed sleepers and new softwood sleepers it is important to consider the safety of your intended use.

Railway Sleeper Safety

While you might be looking for that rustic, old cottage aesthetic for your home or garden, there are some safety considerations to address. Reclaimed railway sleepers are just that, reclaimed. They were used on the railway for many years and have been covered with dirt and oil over their lifetime.

The reclaimed sleepers we have available at Grangewood Fencing were treated with creosote which can leech from the wood and into any surrounding soil, making them unsuitable for use in raised beds intended for growing fruit and veg. It is also unadvisable to use them in areas where there will be regular contact with skin (garden furniture, playareas, etc) or indoors (fireplaces, lintels, etc).

For the above applications, it is always recommended that new sleepers are used.

New railway sleeper uses

New railway sleepers are pressure-treated with chemicals that are safe for human contact post-treatment, making them ideal for a number of uses such as:

• Ponds

Our New Railway Sleepers are supplied pressure treated, known as Tanalised. This will enhance the style and help protect the timber from insect infestation, fungal decay and rot. As the timber is exposed to weather conditions it may fade over time. Further staining is recommended to enhance the appearance of the product if this occurs.

Please Note: Tanalised pressure treated timber has a built-in colouration and depending on the timber species the treatment colour may vary slightly.

Log Selection

When using natural resources careful selection is the fundamental ingredient in creating successful products. All raw material is hand selected to suit the individual, intended components. It is vital each component is produced from the appropriate section of the log and are made from the highest quality raw material. The logs are then sawn into rectangular shapes in the ‘green mill’. Here the logs are fully saturated and the saws leave a rough surface on the wood, as some of the fibres are torn out rather than cut. If timber is to be seasoned, or dried, then this will takes place next with the removal of much of the moisture from inside the timber. Seasoned products are then machined to give smooth or shaped surfaces.
