5 Cheap Wall Beds We Have Found
We have looked at the prices for Murphy beds across a lot of stores online.
Many solutions are pretty pricey, so we have tried and find some of the cheaper models.
1) A Murphy Bed For Around $1,000 (incl. shipping)
This fine Murphy bed is the cheapest one we could find, and we also think it’s quite elegant and minimalistic.
It will fit an 11″ mattress, so no compromise here when we talk comfort!
We found it here for $1,100.
When you think about it, $1,100 is pretty cheap when the price includes shipping to your address in the U.S. or Canada.
A Murphy bed is heavy and hard to ship. The frame outside the bed frame and the piston system adds weight to the bed, and it’s quite hard to load onto a truck manually. So it’s great to avoid having to move it and load it into a truck or a trailer.
Here are some specs:
- Full Size: Height: 82.5 inches, Width: 61 inches, Length: 90.5 inches
- Queen Size: Height: 88.5 inches, Width: 66 inches, Length: 90.5 inches
- Colors: Charcoal, Dark Brown, Pure White, Brown
- Mattress maximum height: 11 inches (mattress not included)
- Weight: 250 Lb
(The average weight of a Murphy bed is 250- 560 lb, so this is definitely on the lighter end of the scale.)
It’s a classic and beautiful Murphy bed made of manufactured wood in Canada. It has excellent ratings on the reviews of the store. We found over 400 reviews with an average rating of 4/5 stars.
Here you can see the bed in a typical bedroom setting.
Ideally, you want your room to have a ceiling height of around 100 inches, but a little less can also work. If you don’t have a high enough ceiling, you can go with the model below, which is mounted sideways (horizontally).
If you want a more classic design, there are also other good alternatives.
2) Affordable Horizontal Murphy Bed
Lori Wall Beds also have a horizontal option.
Again we really love the simple and elegant design of this system. And the best part is that it only costs $799!
Check out the system and the options >> here.
It’s the cheapest Murphy bed you can buy – and we’ve really looked everywhere!
This next bed is a little more expensive but still affordable, and again it includes shipping to any address in the States.
It comes with or without the shelving units on the side, which you can buy as add-ons.
It can also hold an 11″ mattress to fit a good spring mattress or a high-quality foam mattress.
This model is mounted sideways and can, therefore, be ideal for a room with a lower ceiling. If you are in a low loft space or have sloping walls, this bed will typically be a good fit. The construction makes it possible to install it almost anywhere.
We found it here for $1,399.
(Note: Scroll down a little bit on the shop page to find it)
Here are some specs:
- Twin Size: Height: 62 inches, Width: 84.6, Length: 61.8 inches
- Full Size: Height: 62 inches, Width: 84.6 inches, Length: 67 inches
- Queen Size: Height: 62 inches, Width: 84.6 inches, Length: 69.6 inches
- Colors: White and Light Oak.
- Mattress maximum height: 11 inches (mattress not included)
- Space from floor to underside of the bed: 8 inches
- Weight: 253- 344 Lb
This bed comes in a twin size as well as a queen size and a full-size design. So you can have either size you want. The weight goes up quite a bit when you reach the queen size to mount it properly into the wall.
There are also several other designs at the store we link to above if you are willing to pay a little extra.
3) the Lori Bed
The Lori Bed company offers this great minimalistic and stylish Murphy bed!
That’s when you use this link (They have been so kind as to offer our readers a $100 discount! It’s automatically applied when you get to the checkout page!)
That’s the best price we have found online:
Definitely check out the store here!
We want to support these guys because they are a great company with great prices!
Here are some more pictures of this bed in a studio apartment:
See more pictures here on their site.
They have created the bed with straightforward construction to keep the cost as low as only $799.
That also means that you don’t get a spring/piston system to help lift the bed!
But in reality, you don’t tuck the bed away that often.
Believe me; we’ve been sleeping in a Murphy bed for almost 7 years now!
4) White And Modern Design
This sweet white wall bed is also quite affordable.
It’s very well-reviewed and comes in queen size as well as king size. It’s also available in a dark finish, and it has an 18” depth so you can fit a really nice mattress inside the bed frame.
We found it here at $1,289 incl. Shipping.
(Note: Scroll down a little bit on the shop page to find it)
This model is also a great option. It has a strong and comfortable bottom and a nice and stylish foot you flip down when you lower the bed.
Here are some specs:
- Full Size: Height: 88.9 inches, Width: 63.35 inches, Length: 20 inches
- Queen Size: Height: 88.9 inches, Width: 69.4 inches, Length: 22.6 inches
- Colors: White, Tuscany Brown.
- Mattress maximum height: 10- 12 inches (mattress not included)
- Weight: 364 lb.
This bed is very stylish and will look great in a small space.
5) This Bed Is Only $999
We found it here at $999 incl. shipping (!)
This is another model with sleek and stylish lines.
I really like the two colors and the finish of this design. I’m happy that the prices on these beds have finally come down. They cost at least $1,799, but the increasing demand has driven the prices down (I guess).
It also comes in grey, and it can hold a 10” mattress.
Even though it’s a cheap model, it can actually hold up to 1,000 pounds. So you can definitely use this daily and with your spouse. But for two persons, you might consider the queen size version, which is slightly bigger and offers a little more width.
6) Murphy Bed With A Closet
We found it here at $1,399 incl. Shipping.
If you prefer to have the closet built into the bed system, this is the option for you.
It looks really great when you fold the bed up, and you can get it in several colors, from white to dark grey.
The storage parts are actually included in the price, so this is a pretty good deal when you consider how much you get: A Murphy bed, a closet, and shipping!
Chest Beds Are Great Too (And Cheaper!)
Chest beds are a little different from your standard Murphy bed.
They are built into a dresser-style type of furniture, making them even more compact than a regular wall bed.
These beds are really popular as guest beds, and younger people will also often use them daily as their regular beds. They are a little cheaper than a regular Murphy bed, and they are also easier to assemble as they don’t have to be mounted in the wall.
This model is only $869, including shipping.
The Chest beds start at around $900, including shipping to your doorstep. If you are not too fond of installing a Murphy bed (it requires two persons and some tools), you might be happy to hear that a Chest bed is much easier to assemble.
The main difference between the different chest bed models is how the exterior finish is made. Some are more white and modern, while other models are more rustic or classic cabin-style designs.
We prefer modern and clean designs, but if you click over to the stores below the models, you will see many different designs as well.
Other cool chest bed designs like this one are more like a queen size chest bed.
We found this model at the best price here.
The bed system comes with a foam mattress, ready to be installed. That’s a great thing about the Chest beds. You don’t have to go out and invest in a mattress after you acquired one of these beds.
This makes it different from the Murphy beds, where you will have to find a mattress that matches the style and dimensions.
Read our tips for finding a mattress that will work with a Murphy bed. Not all mattresses work with wall beds, and there are some things you need to consider before you get a mattress.
How Much Do Chest Beds Cost?
Chest beds typically cost around $850 – $1.400. The price depends on the bed frame’s size and how durable and strong materials the manufacturer has used for the construction.
A twin size chest will typically cost less than a full size or a queen-size bed.
We have found some of the cheapest Chest beds, and they start at around $850.
You can see the different models when you click over to the stores by following the pictures’ links. The systems can be used daily, but people normally buy Chest beds as a guest bed.
How Do The Chest Beds Work?
The chest bed designs are quite similar when it comes to how they function.
The mattress of the chest bed is folded into three layers inside the chest. When you open the chest, you can pull out the lower part of the cabinet. The sliding part has wheels mounted for the system to slide out seamlessly.
Here’s how you open the chest bed system:
- Pull out the three-tier telescope bottom drawer using the handle.
- Open the top lid
- Release the safety latches on each side
- Lower the front panel
- Lift the handles mounted on the inner panel
- Unfold the mattress on top of the panel
- Put the pillow and comforter on top of the mattress.
They are straightforward to operate, and they don’t require much force. Even a child can open a chest bed.
When the bed is folded into the chest piece, you can store pillows and comforters inside the bottom drawer.
They are the perfect solution for a guest room or if you want to store an extra bed inside your living room or in your studio apartment. When you place a vase or something similar on top of the chest piece, you don’t think this is actually a hidden bed.
Build your own Murphy bed
If you are up for the challenge of building your own Murphy bed, we are currently working on a website to help you get a good result.
The website is called MurphyBedHQ.com, and it contains lots of information on how to go about building a bespoke solution.
We have chosen to build our own Murphy bed, which we sleep in every night, and we absolutely love it. It transforms our bedroom into an office every day.
Building your own bed is the best way to get a cheap Murphy bed, but it’s a little complicated, so we suggest following a plan – unless you have good carpentering skills.
We have put up a Murphy bed plan for a plain and simple bed.
>> Find it here + a link to a good Murphy bed kit we can recommend.
It’s important to use professional hardware for the system to avoid any injury or accidents, especially if you have kids running around in the house during the day.
We used a piston system for our bed (as you can see below). You can also get spring systems, and no matter what you choose, you should expect it to lose tension over the years.
So you might want to change pistons/springs after 8-10 years.
Get the plan for our Murphy bed with storage.
As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, we have built our own Murphy bed. We did so to get a model with extra height and storage behind the bed (and below).
Here you can see the bed in a folded-up position. Below the bed, we have storage for a couple of guitars and folding chairs.
This bed is higher than normal Murphy beds. We don’t like sleeping close to the floor, so we chose to raise it.
Here’s a picture of the open bed:
Below you can see the closet we build beside the bed. It holds all our clothes and utilizes the space below the ceiling.
We have mounted straps on the bed to strap the comforter and pillows to the bed to get it up quickly in the morning.
We have tried to utilize every inch for storage. The upholstered headboard can be folded down, and here we store Maria’s sewing machine and my old trumpet, which I rarely use 🙂
We have also installed lights on each side, and when the headboard is in an upright position, it creates a very cozy atmosphere.
We are currently working on an instruction plan for this design, and it will be available on our new website: Murphybedhq.com.
You can also choose to hide your bed on a sofa during the day.
If you are willing to spend a little more…
There are many models on the market, and if you are willing to spend the extra bucks, you can get some very stylish Wall beds with, e.g., bookshelves in front.
Or what about a sofa during the day:
The models above are from this store (with free shipping).
We also have a post here on cheap space-saving furniture. Many of the great designs are too expensive, so we tried to gather all the best bargains we have come across online!
How Much Do Murphy Beds Cost?
Murphy beds cost from around $1,000 and up to over $6,000 for the costly models. This price will typically include shipping to your doorstep. The cheapest models are basic queen size or twin size models.
The price goes up as you add more features to the bed like:
- A sofa on the front
- Shelves on the front:
- Cabinets on the side:
- A desk on the front:
- A dining table on the front:
- A Murphy bed bunk bed system
The price really depends on what you want. If you have the skills to modify and adjust the bed design yourself, you will probably get the best price if you buy a basic design and attach a table, etc., on the front yourself.
It’s not that hard to mount a desk on the front, and if you are well-skilled in the art of carpentry, you might even be able to mount a sofa on the front of the Murphy bed system yourself.
We recommend shopping at one of the stores we list above. This is where we have found the best prices online.
