9. Mizerak Dynasty Pool Table Review – Space Saver

I don’t really recommend the Mizerak Dynasty Space Saver Pool Table, but the reason I put it on this list is it is one of the cheapest pool tables with a ball return system. Some players don’t like having to walk around the table to get the balls. So, having a ball return system is ideal for these types of players. This table is typically listed for under $1,000 and you get what you pay for.

The look and feel of this Mizerak Pool Table is pretty cheap. The sides of the table appear to have a wood finish but it is really a bamboo laminate that goes over it to make it look less plain. I haven’t seen this happen on this table yet but typically laminate panels on the side of the table begin to peel and make the table look very cheap.

This table is also not a slate table, it is an MDF play bed so the play field won’t have the optimal and level roll of a slate table. MDF is a type of wood that is made up of wood chips bound together by a wax. I’m not saying this isn’t a decent starter table but I feel there are many better tables within a reasonable price range that you could choose instead.

One potential benefit of this table is the fact that it is a little bit smaller than the average pool table but not so small that it would be considered a kids table. So, it may fit better in some rooms of people’s homes.

You don’t have to take my word for it though. If you would like to read other people’s reviews yourself click on the button below. At the time of writing this review, the table was available for sale but is now currently unavailable. So, click the button below to check availability on Amazon. For some, it is the perfect table and for others it is too cheaply made.

10. Minnesota Fats Pool Table Review – Fullerton

The Minnesota Fats Fullerton Pool Table is the perfect blend of modern and conventional styles and it has the perfect size to play billiards. This table is an 8-foot pool table. Whether you are an amateur or a professional player, having this in your home will give you scope for great practice. 8ft pool tables are considered to be the optimal size for billiard tables because moving around them, leaning, and maneuvering during your game is easy with this size.

Along with that, you will receive a handful of necessary billiard accoutrements including:

  • chalk cubes
  • a triangle rack
  • a ball set
  • 2 one-piece cues
  • a table brush

The 8ft pool table is made with fine grade wood veneer featuring a dark chestnut color and the rail sites are made with inlaid pearlized polycarbonate giving it a robust finish. The synthetic leather pockets are of dark brown color and have an elegant diamond embossed design.

The four legs are made of tapered wood while the play bed is created of 1-inch Dur-A-Bond with an inbuilt leveling system. The cloth used is a professional grade wool blend cloth in burgundy color.

However, users have faced trouble while trying to resurface the surface board and most people found it difficult to assemble. Apart from that, some people complained of having found scratches and dents in a new product, which is highly disappointing.

So, while this table is a decent table it seems their shipping practices aren’t the best and have caused many items to be damaged on arrival. So, I don’t really recommend this product. I feel it’s not really worth the risk of getting a damage table on arrival.

Pool Table Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Pool Table

Having a pool table at home with all the right arrangements will give people an opportunity to interact and socialize in a more comfortable environment. In gatherings and house parties, having a pool table can provide great entertainment and make your house the go-to spot for future events – whether it is a family event or a friends’ reunion.

The list of reasons for why to invest in a pool table can go on and on. But there are some factors that you have to keep in mind before making your purchase. This article will extensively outline all that you need to know before purchasing a billiard table. Rest assured, this is a worthwhile investment to make!

Various Sizes of Pool Tables

One of the biggest factors to consider before choosing a pool table is its size. Billiard tables can be of various types, but one main feature that sets them apart is the size. Understanding the different size pool tables will help you decide how to choose the best pool table. The most common sizes of pool tables are:

Standard Pool Tables

Standard sized pool tables measure approximately 8 feet. This is the size pool table I currently have in my house. 8 foot pool tables are often considered the perfect size billiard table. These tables aren’t as small as bar tables (mentioned below) but aren’t as big as professional tables.

They are basically the perfect balance between size and skilled play. Since 8 foot pool tables aren’t too big, it is easy to learn how to play on them. It may be easier to learn on a smaller table such as a bar table but when switching from a small 7 ft pool table to a larger table, it is easy to miss shots due to the increased distance of each shot.

I personally recommend learning on an 8 ft pool table because it will best prepare you for any table you come across. On this size table, most players can easily adjust and even make some trick shots on occasion.

With almost all size pool tables, you can play most billiards games including 8 ball and 9 ball pool. So, this isn’t something you need to worry about. The only games that I can think of that you can’t play on the basic table sizes: 7ft, 8ft, and 9ft are English Billiards and games that require no pockets.

Large Pool Tables

A large pool table measures 9 feet and is suitable for professional players. This is because a 9 foot pool table requires more precise aim and control; this can be hard for entry-level players. To play on a 9 foot pool table, hand expertise simply will not be enough. Sometimes, you will also have to use awkward leg positions such as laying over the table and you’ll need better eye concentration for appropriate targeting. This can be tough for people who are just starting out.

Although the large table gives more room for maneuverability, when the balls are closely packed within one area, the expansive size of the pool table will make it even more difficult to make successive shots. Playing on a large pool table will take practice, time, effort, and expertise.

My first time playing on a large pool table was a smack in the face. I had always thought I was very good at pool! Then I played on a 9 ft pool table and realized how much more precise I needed to be. It took me a while to adjust. Luckily I learned on an 8 ft table so it didn’t take too long but I can imagine it would have taken way longer if I had learned on a 7 ft pool table or bar pool table.

Bar Pool Tables

Bar tables designed for billiards are also known as 7 foot pool tables. These are shorter than the aforementioned billiard tables.

The compact size makes it easy to make shots and makes your accuracy go up by a lot. However, due to this size pool table being commonly used in bars, they aren’t always the best quality. Before picking a quality bar table you have to check for some issues and ensure that there are no dead rails or matted felt, especially when buying used.

I enjoy switching from my 8 ft personal pool table at home to a 7 ft bar table because it is a lot easier to aim and I can play more casually. However, I personally wouldn’t want a 7 ft table in my house unless that’s all that would fit. I think an 8 ft table is the ideal house size.

Mini Pool Tables

mini pool tablemini pool table

Mini billiard tables are very small compared to the other types and is usually between 20 inches to 5 feet long. This size table is typically used for children. It can be a great way to get a child interested in the game without allowing them to damage your main table. If you have a dedicated games room in your house, you can place a mini pool table in there and it won’t take up much space.

You can also put this in your yard or office space, as a scope of entertainment whenever you are stressed out or need to do some activity in order to refresh your mind. Furthermore, their small size makes them a perfect gift item.

However, keep in mind that these cannot be used to play games professionally and aren’t typically used by active billiards players. This size table is mainly used for children and as a non-competitive pass time.

How to choose the best pool table for you?

Although size may be one of the biggest factors to consider before choosing
the best pool table, there are other vital factors to consider as well. These aspects include:

Surface board material

The material of the surface of a pool table must have the right type and right quality. Some common materials that billiard tables are made with include fiberboard, slatex, plywood, slate, permaslate, and honeycomb. Among these, only slate will give you the smooth billiard experience like no other.

You will also have to check the thickness of the slate. A standard one-inch slate is perfect for billiards. This is also the standard and recommended size. Other available sizes of the slate are ¾ inches and 1 ¼ inches. Please note that some sellers mark their slate as 1-inch although they are, in fact, 7/8 inch. So be sure to double-check this information.

Size

The size of the table plays a large roll in picking the best home pool table because not everyone has a huge open room that can accommodate a large pool table.

There are multiple reasons to choose a different size pool table, the main reason is how the table plays. The larger the pool table the more precise your aim needs to be. Due to this, professional and competitive players usually play on 9 foot pool tables. However, the happy medium between difficulty and comfort is typically an 8 foot pool table.

The other factor is the size of the room. You can measure your room prior to ordering a pool table so that you know what size table will work best. Pool sticks are typically around 5 feet long. So, in the ideal pool table room you will have 5 feet between the pool table and the wall on every side. While this is the ideal scenario, this isn’t always possible.

In my home we have a 5 ft gap between all sides except one. So, we did 2 things, 1 however is way more drastic than the other. First we started using a shorter stick on that side of the table when necessary. After many years of doing this, we cut a bar/window in the wall which gave people a place to sit and watch and a way for us to shoot without needing a short stick.

While I understand removing a wall and making a bar isn’t in most people’s plans. Utilizing a short stick for specific shots isn’t too difficult.

Another option you have if you can’t find space in your home is to buy an outdoor pool table. Outdoor pool tables are made with special material so it can survive the elements, while still providing a great game of pool.

Pockets

pool table pocketspool table pockets

There are 3 different types of pockets you can get, you can get ball return, drop pockets, or drop-down ball return pockets.

On ball return pool tables, when a ball is pocketed it then runs on multiple tracks under the table until it gets to the end of the table. This allows easier racking as you don’t have to walk around the table to get each ball. However, with a ball return system, the table will end up being bulkier because of the extra tracks that must run under the table.

On a drop pockets pool table, when a ball is made it just sits in the pocket. With this system, there is no need for the extra tracks under the table. So, in many cases, these tables are sleeker than the previously mentioned ball return table.

The last type of pocket is essentially a combination of both the previous styles. It’s called a drop down ball return table. It gives you the best of both without the bulky design. Instead of having a track that leads to a normal ball holder. The tracks lay flush with the table and when you want to get the balls you open a drop down compartment at the end of the table. This allows for a very sleek design while still allowing a ball return system in the table.

Legs

The legs of a pool table are what holds the entire structure upright and support its weight. 90% of the total weight of a pool table resides within the cabinet, and so very strong and sturdy legs are required to hold it up. Furthermore, billiard is a sport that requires the player to lean on the surface of the table with full weight and this adds another reason to ensure the legs are rigid.

Essentially there are two types of legs, the first of which is known as “post legs”. Post legs are also called perfect legs and they are created with wood all the way from slate to the feet. The other type is known as “industry-standard legs”, meaning, instead of one solid piece of leg, it uses the locking nut and bolt system to hold the parts together.

Frame

The frame of pool tables is another important element in holding the slate in place. A good frame must meet two essential criteria – it must be made of wood and have cross beams for added support. The type of beams, however, depends upon the size of the slate.

For pool tables that have a slate of ¾ inch, a couple of beams will suffice. However, for larger slates of one inch and above require four beams, being two cross beams and two long beans depicting a quad beam construction. A great frame makes for a great game!

Cloth or Felt

billiard feltbilliard felt

To determine a suitable cloth, you need to decide the levels of priority among durability, speed, and traction. If durability is your prime concern, then clothes that are made with a combination of nylon and wool with a Teflon coating would be the best option. For a felt like this, the weight should be around 18-22 ounces per yard.

On the other hand, if traction and speed while playing are your major concerns then worsted felt would be your best option. These are made from wool and include fibers that are combed before being spun. This will provide better speed and traction during your pool game.

Having durable felt is very beneficial in bars or when children will be playing on the table because it is more likely to be damaged. If the players that will be playing on the table are experienced, I would recommend a table with nice felt since you won’t have to worry about the felt ripping from improper shooting.

Cushions and rails

Another major criterion you need to consider to choose the best pool table is the quality of the cushions and rails. Cushions and rails of pool tables are typically made with either synthetic materials or gum blends. Synthetic materials are not a good option as they contain a hefty amount of clay fillers, which with time will deteriorate the quality of the rails. To choose the best pool table, look for ones that have rails made with natural gum blends as these tend to last longer.

When rails or cushions deteriorate, you end up with dead cushions. This means that when the ball hits the rail it won’t bounce off as it is supposed to. The cushion will absorb the momentum and the ball will slow and typically go in an unpredictable direction.

This leads to very inconsistent and annoying play. It isn’t a cheap fix either so it’s best to get a high-quality table with high-quality cushions from the start. I understand pool tables can be expensive but would you rather buy a table now and either hate playing on it or need a new table in a year or buy a good table that can last 5-10 years or even longer.

Buying a high-quality table to start can save you tons of money in maintenance and replacement costs in the long run.

Style

Nowadays there are various forms of pool tables available so
that you can pick the one best suited to your requirements. Modern billiard tables offer different colors, industrial pool tables have legs made from iron, bumper billiard tables can be transformed into poker tables, tabletop billiard tables are small and you can place them on a table, and lastly, you can opt for foldable pool tables if you want a portable one.

Also, if you’re willing to pay a premium there are tables that double as dining room tables. These dining room pool tables have a cover that allows it to be converted into a dining table. When you want to play pool, you remove the cover and play pool. These are typically very expensive but they can be perfect if you don’t have an extra room in your house to allow for a dedicated pool table. There are a few inexpensive ones listed in the pool tables above but in most cases, you get what you pay for when it comes to pool tables.

Billiard Accessories

Many billiard tables come with a starter set of accessories. These accessories are great to get you up and running immediately but typically aren’t high quality products. Since you’re making such a big investment, you should consider upgrading the balls, rack and cue sticks.

The best brand of pool balls is Aramith pool balls. You can click here to read my full review on Aramith Pool Balls. One important feature of Aramith Premium Pool Balls is that they are burn resistant. When you hit a pool ball and it slides on the table, it burns pieces of the felt due to friction. This causes your felt to become worn down and will require fast replacement.

Aramith Pool Balls maintain a low friction temperature to limit the amount of burn on the table. So, buying a good set of pool balls can save you money in the long run.

When it comes to pool racks, I recommend getting a better rack because some cheap racks will have sharp edges or splintering wood that can snag on your tables felt. This can cause ripped felt and a hefty maintenance bill.

Although this rack is a little unconventional, one of my favorite racks is the Magic Ball Rack. This rack is more of a rack template, it goes under the balls and holds them in place without interfering with the break. You can read the full review of the Magic Ball Rack here.

Conclusion

A pool table is a big investment, so you want to make sure you choose the right table for you. There’s a lot of items to consider when choosing a pool table. One of the biggest factors is the size of the table but there are many other factors such as the board material, legs, frame, cloth and rails. Once you know what you would like for all these items, you can narrow down your pool table choices and figure out what price range you’re looking at.

If the price point is too high for the features you want, you may have to make compromises in some areas. However, it may be worth waiting until you can afford your ideal table instead of making compromises that would cost you money in the long run. I hope this article helps you choose your next billiard table. Let me know what you think of this Billiards Buyers’ Guide and if there’s anything that I missed in the comments.
