Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 Review – Bestseller For a Good Reason

The Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 is the successor to the most popular and most widely-used electric scooters ever – the Xiaomi M365 and the Xiaomi M365 Pro models. It is very similar in both looks and performance to the latter, but comes with some small but much-needed improvements, most notably the stronger tires, and that makes it the next king of electric scooters worldwide.

Who should buy the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2?

The Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 is the next everyman’s scooter, designed for incredible versatility, able to serve many different types of owners.

The long range of 45 km / 28 mi, and the weight of 14.2 kg / 31.3 lbs, make it a great pick for commuters, urban riders, young professionals and entrepreneurs, or anyone looking for a cool way to cruise around town.

The simplicity and ease-of-use that Xiaomi practically established for the rest of the scooter world, continues to be a trademark in this new model as well, so the Pro 2 is perfect for beginners, first-time owners, and entry-level scooterists.

The dual brakes, shock-absorbing tires, and the street-legal top speed, make the Pro 2 not only a very safe choice, but also one that complies with traffic laws pretty much everywhere.

People on a budget will also be delighted by what they can get for an affordable sum of money, as this is one of the most budget-friendly scooters available today (that doesn’t suck).

Finally, this is the successor to the best-selling scooters ever, and that label carries a lot of weight. Anyone looking for a reliable, tried-and-tested scooter, that will not disappoint, will find the Pro 2 to be an excellent pick.

Ordering, shipping, discounts, warranty, returns

The Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 is mostly available in Europe. It’s best to get it from Amazon UK in the UK, and GeekBuying for the rest of Europe including the UK as well (although Amazon UK may ship in some European countries as well). Shipping will be free in almost every possible scenario, and it shouldn’t take longer than a week (it will probably take between 1 and 3 days).

If you are buying from GeekBuying, try the coupon code GKB527S, you may get a sweet discount of around $35 if you catch the promotion.

It may be possible to find this scooter in the US as well, but that would be difficult, and probably expensive. It’s much better to just get the Ninebot Max from Amazon in the US.

This may vary based on the merchant, but typically you should get a 2-year warranty and a return period of 30 days.

The Xiaomi scooter line and brand

The jury has been out on this one for a number of years now – Xiaomi is simply the best electric scooter brand in the world.

The countless satisfied Xiaomi scooter owners in every corner of the globe are all the proof we need. It’s impossible to know how many Xiaomi scooters have been sold, but they are almost certainly the best-selling scooters of all time.

On top of that, they provide the majority of scooters for the largest scooter-sharing companies like Lime, Bird, and many others.

Their scooters have been through it all, starting from the classic Xiaomi M365, which was upgraded to the legendary Xiaomi M365 Pro, and the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 being the final iteration in that evolution.

Unboxing, assembly, user manual

box of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2

The Xiaomi Pro 2 arrives in a nice branded Xiaomi box, with all the necessary protective covering around all the parts. In Europe, the box will probably have the Russian word for electric scooter inscribed on it (Электросамокат), so if you don’t understand Russian, no need to worry, you’ve gotten the original scooter.

The box includes:

  • the scooter
  • handlebars
  • Allen key
  • screws
  • tire pump valve
  • charger
  • spare tire
  • user manual
  • warranty card

There is minimal assembly required before riding. You only have to install the handlebar into the stem, and the whole process takes just a minute.

Before rushing out to ride, you need to make sure that:

  • the battery is fully charged
  • all the screws and bolts are tight and secure
  • the tires are sufficiently inflated
  • the brakes are operational and adjusted to your desired level

Also, the manual of the scooter is very short, clear, and succinct, and I strongly recommend going through it, or at least quickly scanning it, to make sure you don’t miss out on any important details that might be specific to your unit.

Basics, folding, how to use

deck of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2

The scooter must be connected to the Xiaomi app via bluetooth before you can use it (more about the app in the Apps section below).

A longer press on the power button turns the scooter on or off. When the scooter is on, a short press turns the lights on or off.

Pressing it quickly twice toggles between the 3 speed modes:

  • pedestrian, 5 kmh / 3 mph
  • standard, 20 kmh / 12.4 mph
  • sport, 25 kmh / 15.5 mph

The right thumb-throttle accelerates the scooter. The left handlebar hosts the brake lever, and also has the bell, which is loud enough for pedestrians to hear it. Pretty standard stuff.

The Pro 2 is a kick-to-start scooter. You need to kick off the ground and accelerate to about 5 kmh / 3 mph before you can use the acceleration. The debate on kick-to-start vs zero-start scooters is still raging, but I believe kick-to-start scooters like this one are the clear winner, as they are much easier on the battery, and they are safer for pushing or carrying as well.

The scooter has a secure folding mechanism, which is still simple to use. A single lever at the stem unlocks the folding mechanism and lets you fold the stem. When folded, the bell locks inside the small hook on the rear fender, making the scooter easy to carry.

Build quality, lifespan, defect rates

This is arguably the best-made affordable scooter in the world right now. The quality level of the scooter is far beyond its price. The reason for that is the vast experience that the Pro 2 has been drawing from. Learning from both the Xiaomi M365 and the Xiaomi M365 Pro, the Pro 2 includes years and years of iterations, fixes, improvements, upgrades, and customer feedback. No other scooter in the world has that luxury and privilege at its disposal.

The whole of the scooter is tough and sturdy, made from high-quality aerospace-grade aluminum alloy. On the touch, it gives off a feel of reliability. The engineering remains largely the same as in the previous model (why change a winning team?). The finishing touches and the attention to detail, while not at the same level as premium scooters, still greatly exceed the expectations of budget owners. The cables are, for the most part, placed inside the stem, which is always good for aesthetics, carrying, and waterproofing. The scooter runs quietly, and the motor makes a gentle humming sound that’s almost impossible to hear. There is no rattling, wobbling, or any unusual sounds coming from the scooter.

The scooter hasn’t been around that long, but early reports on the lifespan are looking very promising. If we consider the fact that this scooter is an upgrade to the Xiaomi M365 Pro (that often went 2 years without a glitch for many owners, and will probably go much longer), we can safely expect the Pro 2 to go for a good number of years without a single major defect.

Design, colors, looks

reflectors of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2

The Pro 2 proudly displays its evergreen Xiaomi lines, colors, and looks, which have been the defining characteristic of not only Xiaomi scooters, but of tons of other copycats, that never quite get that Xiaomi vibe right. The scooter seems to only be available in the traditional matte-black color, with a smaller number of red details than its predecessors (just the charging port and the rim of the front tire).

User experience, day-to-day-use

The ride quality is one aspect where the Pro 2 has provided a lot of improvement. Because of the new and improved tires, the scooter provides a more stable, more confident ride, while reducing the risk of flats at the same time, which is quite difficult to achieve. Turning and cornering are well-balanced, and the overall control and balance of the scooter are very friendly to beginners, including first-time riders.

The lines and the overall build are ergonomic and enable a natural body stance and posture while riding (except for the tallest riders, which may want to look at some scooters for tall adults that may fit them better).

The scooter comes with the cruise control option, which you can turn off through the app if you prefer not to use it.

Brakes and safety

brake of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2

With a disk brake on the rear wheel, and an electronic regenerative brake on the front wheel (or rather, on the motor), the Xiaomi Pro 2 achieves excellent brake redundancy and is a very safe option. Both of the brake systems are reliable, and provide a short stopping distance of somewhere around 6 meters. They are both activated at the same time by the brake lever, which reduces the control complexity and increases safety.

The scooter comes with an electronic anti-lock braking system (E-ABS), which prevents the wheels from locking up when braking, especially over slippery surfaces.

Tires, wheels, fenders

rear view of the brake and wheel of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2

The explosion-proof pneumatic 8.5-inch tires are one of the major points of improvement compared to the Xiaomi M365 Pro model. The old model was notoriously prone to flats, and they were difficult to fix as well. The Pro 2 comes with stronger, puncture-resistant tires that have proven so far to be a lot more durable. And even better, they don’t sacrifice ride comfort at all!

While flats should be rare, they can still happen. Also, a tire can get worn out over time as well, which will also require a change. That’s why the Pro 2 comes with a spare tire, which is a great move by Xiaomi to support their customers in my opinion, as just the tire itself can end up costing quite a lot.

The fenders are stronger than in the previous models, and they are also reinforced with additional steel plates that stabilize them against the wheel. That is another key improvement of the new version.

Screen

LCD screen of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2

The LCD screen is fairly bright and has a strong contrast, so it’s not difficult to read even on brighter days.

It shows:

  • current speed (in your preferred metric system)
  • current speed mode
  • battery level (5 bars)
  • light status
  • bluetooth status
  • lock status
  • overheating
  • error codes

Motor, power, torque

The Xiaomi Pro 2 is a front-drive scooter, and those are always torquier than their rear-drive counterparts. The brushless direct-current hub motor integrated into the front wheel provides 300 Watts of real and 600 Watts of peak power, which is plenty for pretty much every commuter or casual rider. That kind of power gives the scooter good top speed, stable acceleration, solid climbing abilities, and enough carrying capacity for almost any adult rider.

Speed, acceleration, climbing

front tire of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2

The top speed of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 is 25 kmh / 15.5 mph, although in some countries the scooter will ship with a top speed of 20 kmh / 12.4 mph to comply with local traffic laws (most notably Germany). None of those are the maximum speed that the scooter is able to achieve, and installing some custom firmware can unlock greater top speeds of up to 35 kmh / 22 mph.

Xiaomi is usually precise about the specs of their scooters, and the scooter delivers on the promised top speed without any issues, often even for riders that are approaching the weight limit (as long as the battery is reasonably full).

The Pro 2 has somewhat improved upon the acceleration curve compared to the previous model, and it accelerates more gradually and without that slight jerky movement from the start.

The official climb angle is 20% / 12°. I feel that Xiaomi is playing it safe here, as the scooter can clearly climb much better than that, and several owners have confirmed this in hill climbing tests. The scooter will still struggle on steeper hills, but it will continue crawling up, and will only stop moving on the steepest of hills.

Range and commuting

The range of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 is 45 km / 28 mi, and that is arguably this scooter’s strongest weapon. This kind of range makes it stand out in its price category, clearly outshining most other scooters that only provide between 25 and 30 km / 15 and 18 mi of range.

It’s no wonder that the Pro 2 is extremely popular among commuters and urban riders. That kind of range can literally take you anywhere. Plus, the scooter has a very manageable weight and doesn’t occupy too much space when folded, which further makes it great for anyone that uses a mix of their scooter and public transport to get to where they are going.

Battery and charging

The 446 Wh, 36 V lithium battery, situated in the deck, is another strong point of the scooter, and is one of the most well-protected and long-lasting batteries in the scooter world. The smart battery system provides protection against over-charging, over-current, short circuits, overheating, and the elements.

The charging port is located on the left front of the deck, protected by the trademark red plastic cap. The battery takes 8 to 8.5 hours to charge fully (around 8 hours and 20 minutes from my experience).

IP rating and water resistance

The Pro 2 has an IP54 ingress protection standard, which is pretty much the standard water protection level for the vast majority of good scooters. The scooter is protected from water splashes from all angles.

Is the Xiaomi Pro 2 waterproof?

The Xiaomi Pro 2 is water-resistant, but not entirely waterproof. That means it can withstand some riding in the rain, although it should never be submerged in water. It is still strongly advised to avoid riding in the rain as much as you can, although many owners have reported doing so without any problems.

Lights, night rides, legality

main headlight of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 shining bright

The 2W main LED headlight on the top of the stem points down at a slight angle, and lights up the road ahead for about 5-6 meters. There’s also a red brake light on the rear fender that’s turned on when you brake. Both of them are quite strong, which makes the scooter safe for riding at night.

The scooter has many reflector lights placed on various important places on the scooter – two yellow ones on each of the sides in the rear, another two yellow ones on the sides in the front, and a white one in the front of the stem.

All of that lighting makes the scooter compliant with the legal requirements for electric scooters in most countries. I usually recommend getting an extra set of stronger after-market lights for riding at night, especially for budget scooters, but in the case of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2, I don’t think that will be necessary.

Weight, dimensions, portability

person carrying the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2

The Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 weighs 14.2 kg / 31.3 lbs, the same as its predecessor. That is the average weight for a commuter scooter today across all budget models.

When folded, the scooter occupies:

  • 108 cm / 42.5 inches in length
  • 43 cm / 16.9 inches in width
  • 49 cm / 19.3 inches in height

The weight and the volume of the scooter make the scooter easy to carry and handle by pretty much any adult. The scooter will easily fit in public transport, car trunks, doors, small office spaces, narrow hallways, and pretty much everywhere you need to carry it or store it.

Weight limit

The official weight limit of the Pro 2 is 100 kg / 220 lbs. It seems to me that Xiaomi is underreporting this slightly, as riders very close and even above that limit report riding without significant drops in performance. However, it would be unwise to go against the recommendations here, as Xiaomi knows their scooter the best, so if you need more weight capacity, check out some electric scooters for heavy adults.

Accessories and customizations

There are not that many official accessories and customizations for the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2, that come from Xiaomi itself and are custom-made for this particular model. Luckily, the scooter has an identical build to the celebrated Xiaomi M365 Pro, and pretty much all the accessories for it will also fit the Pro 2 as well. Since the Xiaomi models are the most popular scooters in the world, most of the generic accessories for electric scooters should fit (still, check each part before you buy and make sure it can fit the Xiaomi Pro 2, or at least the Xiaomi M365 Pro).

The scooter does not come with a frame for a seat, but some users have chosen to install one on their own, and the operation is seemingly not that complicated and usually works out well. Personally, I would recommend adding the seat only if you think you must have it, as it messes with the structural integrity of the scooter.

I recommend getting either a bag or a trunk at the front if you need it, a hook for your bags, and a phone mount. Also, don’t forget to get a good scooter helmet as well.

Maintenance, repairs, parts

Maintenance for the Pro 2 is simple, and it can be done as a quick check once a week, and a more detailed inspection once a month. At the very least, perform the following checks:

  • the scooter doesn’t have any visible physical damage
  • the brakes are functional and set to your desired level
  • the screen and the power button work properly
  • the tires are inflated at around 50 PSI and you can’t notice any damage upon visual inspection
  • all the screws are tightly screwed (and, possibly, secured with Loctite)

If something goes wrong with your scooter, you should have no problem finding spare parts – a quick search on Amazon for Xiaomi Pro 2 spare parts will likely yield you the parts you need. Also, since the scooter is one of the most popular electric scooters ever, there is a good chance that most repair shops will be familiar with it and be able to fix it easily if you need that.

Apps

a screenshot of the the Mi Home app

Xiaomi scooters connect via bluetooth to the Mi Home app, which is a general-purpose app for Xiaomi devices available for both iPhone and Android. It is one of the best apps for electric scooters, as it doesn’t have the same poor ratings and reviews as most scooter apps have.

The app has a ton of features, including:

  • battery level
  • current speed and speed mode
  • lock the scooter remotely
  • upgrade the scooter’s firmware
  • password
  • metric system
  • lights
  • cruise control

You can’t ride the scooter without connecting it to the app. If you (or someone else) try to push the scooter while it’s locked through the app, the scooter will make a loud beeping noise. That makes theft less profitable for the potential thief, but doesn’t necessarily prevent it, so you should still consider a good scooter lock if you plan on leaving your scooter out.

In addition to the Mi Home app, I recommend checking out the EScooter Helper App by EScooterNerds, which serves as a complementary app and provides additional features like cleaning and maintenance and troubleshooting guides and checklists, calculators, tools, resources, hacks, etc. The app is also available for iPhone and Android.

Speed hack and custom firmware

There are ways to customize the firmware of the Pro 2 and tweak it to perform in the way you want it to. You should know that this process may damage your scooter and void your warranty.

Usually, owners that hack their Pro 2s unlock speeds of up to 35 kmh / 22 mph. The tradeoff is somewhat less range in general, especially if you ride at the top speed most of the time. This video shows a simple way to install the custom firmware.

Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 vs Xiaomi M365 Pro

The Xiaomi M365 Pro and the Pro 2 are the same scooter in many regards.

They look practically the same, with some minor differences. The Pro 2 has fewer red elements, and has the new yellow reflector lights, which are a small plus.

Beyond looks, the headlight of the Pro 2 is quite stronger. The rear fender is also reinforced and much more stable.

Probably the biggest upgrade is the more durable tires of the Pro 2, which have proven to be much more resistant to flats.

Given that both scooters cost about the same, I see no reason to choose the Xiaomi M365 Pro today over the new version. The Pro 2 doesn’t have any critical upgrades, but it does have a number of them, and some of them are pretty cool, like the stronger tires, which makes it the clear choice for new buyers.

Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 vs Xiaomi Electric Scooter 3

Even though the version number of the Xiaomi Electric Scooter 3 is higher, it will still come with significantly less range than the Pro 2, and less performance overall, most notably climbing power, even though the motor power should be the same on paper. The Xiaomi 3 seems to have been made less performant on purpose so it will be street-legal internationally. Most of the other specs will be comparable or identical.

Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 vs Xiaomi 1S

The Xiaomi 1S is a more portable, lighter, less performant version of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2.

Their dimensions are the same, as well as many of the essential features such as the brakes, the build, the water protection, the weight limit, and the design.

The Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 will have a bigger battery, which will provide it with a lot more range (28 mi / 45 km against the 1S’s 18.6 mi / 30 km), which is the main reason I would recommend it over the 1S.

However, the 1S will be about $150 cheaper, and if you’re looking for a similar but cheaper scooter, see my Xiaomi 1S review.

Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 vs Ninebot Max

two Ninebot Max electric scooters

The Ninebot Max is probably the next-level scooter after the Pro 2. It’s about 5 kmh / 3 mph faster, and has a slightly stronger motor. The range of the Ninebot Max is amazing, at 64 km / 40 mi, and its larger 10-inch tires are even stronger and provide even smoother rides. Also, with an IPX5 rating, the Ninebot Max is better protected against water damage.

Interestingly, the Max climbs a bit worse at 11°, and that’s likely because of its bigger weight of 19 kg / 42 lbs, which is about 5 kg / 10 lbs more than the Pro 2. That is not a trivial difference in weight, and for many, that will be too much to carry (plus, the Max takes up more space as well).

For many, the price will be a deciding factor. The Ninebot Max costs about 1.5 times the Pro 2, so it’s not exactly a budget scooter, and the Pro 2 is simply the clear budget winner. Also, since the Pro 2 has quite a lot of range as well, and is significantly lighter and more portable, it is a better choice for beginners and commuters.

The Ninebot Max may be a better choice for the more advanced riders. It could be great as your second scooter. You can see the Ninebot Max review if you want to read more.

Known issues

As the quality of the most famous scooter line in the world continues to increase, the number of issues gets smaller and smaller, and today, with the Pro 2, we truly have to dig deep to find some serious downsides and issues.

I would even dare to say that this scooter doesn’t really have some major flaws.

One major criticism that this scooter has received has been a potentially weak battery, but those are usually isolated incidents, and there is always a small risk of that happening with every scooter. Maybe, maybe, if we’re being extra nitpicky, we might say it would be better if the charging port was further away from the ground and the dirt and the possible water ingress in the future, although today that’s only the case for scooters with the battery in the stem, which is the worse engineering choice as it interferes with the scooter’s balance greatly.

User reviews and popularity

main headlight of the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 turned on

Seems like Xiaomi are on a mission to simply dominate the electric scooter world, and the popularity of each one of their models reflects that. Like its older cousins, the Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 is extremely well-received by the public and the overwhelming majority of its owners are very satisfied.

Even though the scooter has only been released in late 2020, it has already achieved bestseller status on many online merchant listings, and has universally high ratings and raving reviews.

I love electric scooters, so I decided to make a blog about them.
I like doing a lot of research on various models and brands, looking for great value and performance, both through data and experience.
